Bunny Galore’s Movie Nightmares is not unlike other horror host shows; she walks us through what we’re about to watch with friendly banter and no shortage of “darlings,” always tying the movie into the theme of the episode (more on that later). But what does make this show stand out are (1) Bunny herself, and (2) the overall vibe. Bunny Galore is relaxed, playful, and has this posh and polite quality about her that I can only attribute to her being British. It’s not like she doesn’t have raunchy jokes or double entendres — it’s just a more sophisticated, velvet-lined approach that mixes class with sass. And I can say the same for the atmosphere as well; the movies are from a time reigned over by Euro-horror and Hammer renditions, a turn from the gothic to psychology and dread, and the transgressive. Watching Bunny Galore feels like an online version of Telluride‘s Horror Vault timeblock: a small gathering watching 60-year old films on projector. It is a cozy comfort that doesn’t get you ramped up and yelling, but allows you to truly envelop yourself in the film.
Horror leans itself to a certain holiday naturally, so it makes sense that Bunny Galore‘s episodes do the same. Surrounding bigger holidays like Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the New Year, each episode is craftily linked to the movie shown. Bunny Galore‘s 11th season features seven movies: Hell of the Living Dead, Mahakaal, The Beast Must Die, Satanic Rites of Dracula, House in Nightmare Park, Carry on Screaming, and Vampire in Venice. A nice blend of monster madness, blood suckers and brain eaters, horror comedies and even Bollywood-style musical numbers, there’s no lack of variety here. And like other horror hosting shows, there are breaks added in throughout the episodes featuring cheeky advertisements and quips from Bunny herself. We’re not just watching a movie, we’re experiencing it.
Over the years, I have carved out a small niche for promoting Indie films, and Bunny Galore fits right in with its presentation of non-mainstream films, giving them a new light and resurrecting them for a brand new audience. For this I am greatly appreciative. Bunny Galore’s Movie Nightmares is that perfect blend of fun fluff, interesting information, solid movie selection, grindhouse greats, and most importantly, a host that doesn’t come off as a caricature or know-it-all, but someone who loves the genre — someone who takes terror and runs with it.
