We’ve all been there — depressed, out of sorts, looking for a will and a way. The Sweet Sound of Branch Shredder is this story, showing that even ads can be a force for good… sometimes.
A man is depressed and spends his days on his couch. One day, an advertisement about a shredder appears on his TV. The shredder will change his life.
The Sweet Sound of Branch Shredder, HHFF
After a night of screaming and shouting, a visibly-drained man spends his mornings looking out his window into the sea of barren branches, then sitting alone on his drab sofa and eating pre-made meals. He turns the TV on only to be greeted by a commercial speaking directly to him. Promising to help drown out the sorrows of those pesky branches, the tree trimmer advertisement looks pretty tantalizing, making our main guy go out and purchase one. But not all is solved, as using the shredder leaves him in a euphoric state that ends in bloodshed for those trying to tear the man and the machine apart.

Outrageous horror comedies are some of my favorite selections at festivals, and Branch Shredder is certainly one of those picks. It starts off rather sad, then goes into a ridiculous plot of the man becoming one with his shredder. Unfortunately for him, his future is stained in red after a late-night run-in with a very upset neighbor complaining of the noise. There is a surprising amount of blood involved with a pretty cool stick-through-the-body effect. Though Branch Shredder is light on kills (there is only one), they make that singular kill matter.
But what really seals the deal is what happens after that: a nice backyard barbeque while finishing off the last pieces in the shredder. Surprisingly, Branch Shredder ends on a delightful note for our protagonist, seemingly ending his depressed state with the opportunity to continue using it as his main form of employment. Branch Shredder is such a silly concept that goes from melancholy to amusing — a happy ending, if you will. It expertly hides the sad and dangerous parts with lighthearted whistling and a positive outlook on life.
At roughly 22 minutes, The Sweet Sound of Branch Shredder is a great fit for a dose of dread during your lunch break; just be aware of the subtitles (it’s in French). In a world full of hyper-personalized ads, you’ll enjoy the humor — and the horror!
