THE SWAMP HORROR #1 – Grimmcore Studios

I am probably one of the biggest fans of Grimmcore Studios, having bought into their past few campaigns about ancient bat gods, werewolf priests, and 50s-style horror comics. And now, they’re taking us down to the bayou and giving us more of the dark and depraved stories they’re known for: The Swamp Horror #1.

A cosmic horror comic book about mad scientists, Eldritch gods, and voodoo set in the Louisiana swamps during the 1980s!

It is 1987 and a professor Crandall and his assistant Raoul paddle their rowboat deep into the muddy Louisiana trenches. The water changes, the air around them grows more ominous, and as they ponder the reason for recent business development plans in a place known to house a serpent god, they approach a gate of screaming totems promising the entrance to evil. It is here that the mystery begins; underwater creature attacks, rotten bodies growing an unknown fungus, and conjure magic that hides a disturbing secret.

Inspired by the 1953 short story “The Swamp Horror” (Beware! Chilling Tales of Horror #15), Grimmcore Studios take us into the humid backwaters of long-forgotten terrors. Draped in mysticism with a mad scientist in search of glory, The Swamp Horror #1 is a modern-age pulp horror story that retains its 20th century roots with quick action and gruesome panels.

The Swamp Horror #1‘s plot is a fun one, leaving us with just enough scares to quench our thirst for blood, yet doesn’t give it all away at once. Bit by bit we’re fed small pieces of story that slowly work together to form a blanket of bad juju; the fungus is otherworldy, the people are untrustworthy, and there’s something in the water that is causing a lot of ruckus. You’d think that something set in the late 80s (still technically modern times) would involve much more science-based spectacle, but this story reminds us that rumors and legend are still strong on the bayou.

With the promise of a money-hungry men and an Eldritch Terror come true, there’s no telling how crazy The Swamp Horror #1 will get; it certainly ups the ante from its 50s inspiration. Perfect for fans of creature features, cosmic horrors, enchanted terrors, body horror, and more, this comic would fit right in with the new and not-so-new. And like past Grimmcore releases, The Swamp Horror #1 serves as an opener for upcoming chapters (not to mention the perks!).
