REVIEW — Better Luck Than Chuck (Episode 1)

It’s a sick day and you’re browsing the TV guide for anything but the usual small claims court shows and Jerry Springer reruns. You’re a horror fan, and nothing would make you feel better than a game show straight from Hell. That’s where Better Luck Than Chuck comes in — a trivia challenge with a horror host that gives Married with Children‘s Peg Bundy a run for her money. Test your knowledge as The Widow and horrifying hubby Charlie dish out quick facts and snide remakes to each other in this grim game show.

Meet The Widow, “The Wittiest Witch of the Midwest” and her corpse of a husband Charlie, the hosts of BETTER LUCK THAN CHUCK, who invite horror fans into their basement to compete in a trivia game show that tests their insight into fright.

Better Luck Than Chuck, IMDB

To set the scene, we open on a basement living area where decomposed, re-animated corpse Charlie (played by Adam Michaels) wallows in his sorrows as witchy wife The Widow (Alexis Allotta) reminisces on their past 50 years of marriage. As a gift, she turns their basement into a game show floor outfitted with everything from podiums to neon lights. And so begins the newly-titled Better Luck Than Chuck extravaganza! With witty conversation and three horror fanatic guests, we dive right into the meat of the show: trivia. Players pick between five categories and answer questions, earning points to advance to the next round. And of course, there are prizes to be won.

Trust me when I tell you that I was screaming out answers, sometimes before buttons were even pressed. Better Luck Than Chuck offers fast-paced, fun questions that every horror fan can appreciate, and even if you get some wrong, you’ll learn something new along the way. Mostly asked by The Widow, Better Luck Than Chuck also offers video call-in questions by horror industry greats like Mike Flanagan, Chad Villella, and BJ McDonnell, making the show star-studded and adding an air of legitimacy as well. In the final round, the player with the most points gets to rummage through Charlie’s workshop looking for items related to The Widow’s clues, each correct item earning an additional prize. It’s always different playing from home as opposed to playing the game live, so I can only imagine the anxious nerves these players had!

It’s a super easy premise, but Better Luck Than Chuck feels special for many reasons. The first thing that hits you is the nostalgia factor that — as I referenced at the top of this review — we’ve all had, laying on the couch watching your daytime television “stories.” The mid-century aesthetic ticks all the boxes too, giving a nice dichotomy between a clean, retro vibe and the gruesome appearance and backstory of the hosts. Better Luck Than Chuck then gives us something to root for with players just like us — people dedicating their lives to the genre and just being all-around rad people. It’s hard not to like this show.

With all this work, you’d think that this show was backed by some big studio and some big money. But no, as of this writing, Better Luck Than Chuck is indie! Independently produced and not currently affiliated with a distributor or streaming platform, it’s flat-out amazing how much has gone into this series. The set pieces and talent are top-par, production is astounding, and they even offer prizes any horror lover would want to own (including media, art, festival tickets, and the grand prize of a trip to Halloween Horror Nights).

Better Luck Than Chuck may be made by horror fans, for horror fans, but that certainly doesn’t mean it can’t be enjoyed by others too. The retro styling paired with rapid action and horror callbacks makes this game show just as genre relevant as it is entertaining. I’ve only seen the first episode, but I’ll definitely be tuning in for more. For now, the 6-episode season is ready to go — can you hit the buzzer on these hot trivia topics before the timer runs out?
