New Year New Me: Speculating the Trends of 2024

Happy New Year! 2024 is here, so let’s hypothesize what we may see coming down the pipeline. Hopefully, something spooky! I see some big ideas ahead of us, changes that are a long time coming and certainly welcome!

Nostalgia Horror Transforms from 80s to 90s

I think it’s safe to say that the 80s train is leaving the station and making way for the 90s — this is my time! As a genuine 90s kid (born in ’91 babbyyyyy!), I’m seeing more and more sneaks of 90s nostalgia creeping through the horror sphere. Stranger Things an other 80s-centric media are slowing down. Now, we have a slew of V/H/S installments, a new In Search of Darkness documentary on horror media between 1990 and 1994, and as I mentioned in the 2023 recap, liminal spaces with nods to indoor play spaces, hotels, and other 90s locations. I’m assuming that this is happening because 1) trends cycle through about 30-ish years later (making it the time of 90s kids, currently), and 2) 90s kids in the film industry are starting to be in charge of projects and their own productions. I’m living for this time right now.

Indiegogo and Kickstarter

Tired of the same old drab movies the big studios are putting out? Why not make your own! Lately I’ve seen so many projects come to fruition using campaigning sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Honestly, it’s a godsend. There are millions of ideas out there and these avenues are a great way to not only spread the word, but reach out and include audiences in the filmmaking process. I personally have contributed to a few different projects and am proud to call myself a certified Producer because of them; this year I definitely plan to do more. Not only are the perks amazing and the stories brilliant, but the horror community is stronger for it.

New Ideas, New IPs

In that same vein, I’m really hoping to see some new ideas coming to the forefront. In a time when every streaming service has their own “Original” lineup and fans can directly contribute to what they want to see, I’m betting we’ll see the beginning of the end for remakes. They won’t go away entirely, but the fans have spoken, and we don’t want another reboot or remake or reimagining… We’re talking to you, Scream! The writing is on the wall, and with the recent SAG/AFTRA strike, we all can see how barren for new material Hollywood has become.

It’s Alive!

Let me just manifest something real quick… I think the light of Universal’s Dark Universe has not completely fizzled out. Nosferatu is coming out during the Christmas season, and Wolf Man was just announced for sometime 2024. That’s all I’m going to say about that — I DON’T WANT TO JINX ANYTHING!

It’s January. It’s 2024. It’s a new day, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to dive in to some horror!

What do you want to see in 2024? Let us know in the comments!
