When Ben Floss of Sanguine Moon Base reached out to me about a spiritual predecessor to Mega Blood Moon: The Freelancer, there was no way I was gonna say no. A 10-episode series of shorts, Guys, I’m Lost follows a man searching for answers. With each episode, things get dicey leave us just as confused as he is.
Shot during the Covid quarantine across 7 states, this follows the adventures of Some Idiot as he tries to find his way…somewhere.
Sanguine Moon Base/Mega Blood Moon
Episode 1
Waking up in the middle of a field overlooking a gorgeous set of mountains couldn’t be that bad… Well, maybe if you actually know where you are and how you got there. This happens to one man who wanders around looking for a ride, a sign, anything to fix his situation. A random note on the ground points him in just that direction.
Episode 2
Flash forward to a city on the water. Our main guy is trampled by another man in an inflatable floating ball. After stealing his wallet, our protagonist is confused.
Episode 3
Perhaps a forest scene will provide the answers? Running away from someone, the barrel of a gun locks in on its target, and a group of hunters tries to pick off our main dude. Just when we think he’s done for, the group shows they’re not as bad as they seem.
Episode 4
Nightttime. Christmas lights. Still looking. The strange note from Episode 1 leads him to a house with a doubly strange man who hands him a new note to follow. The plot thickens. He takes the car.
Episode 5
Driving through rural farmland, he contemplates his situation. Car troubles lead to a change of plans.
Episode 6
Snow often acts as a sound dampener, but not this time. A holiday family gathering offers cheerful faces that give more “freaky” than “friendly.” The gun reappears, and our story takes a sinister turn.
Episode 7
Is he in danger? Who knows. A piece of bologna staves off hunger for the time being. It is oddly orgasmic.
Episode 8
Golden hour turns to nightfall as our guy follows another into the city. What could he possibly be leading him to? A darkened apartment knocks him off his feet.
Episode 9
We’re back under the desert sun. I’m not even sure how to describe this episode without giving too much away, but there are finger guns.
Episode 10
Can what lies behind a locked door provide the key to your problems? A cloudy beach brings forth memories of the past. As the waves wash everything over, a familiar celestial friend rises in the sky.
I truly didn’t know what I was getting into when I started Guys, I’m Lost. Each episode is roughly 2-3 minutes long, making this an extremely quick watch. There is no dialogue, letting you focus on the increasingly strange goings on; on that same note, the accompanying music offers a semi-soothing but still mysterious vibe throughout (I’d liken it to Disasterpeace’s soundtrack for It Follows).
Watching as the man crosses vast expanses, there is a strong dichotomy between the beautiful landscapes and the awfully odd occurrences happening to him. Small things like weird smiles and hand gestures paired with nostalgic settings lull you into a false sense of comfort before thrusting you into danger. Episode 4‘s description describes Guys, I’m Lost best: “Many who wander often muse. Some wanderers, however, don’t muse at all. They get into odd situations with odd men in odd places. Often quietly.”
And then there’s the horror aspect, which I’m sure some may point out that it lacks. I, however, think this fits right in with the genre. While a few points in the series offer certain horror characteristics, horror in general is bizarre. It’s off-putting and deviant. Horror is a comfort in a way it definitely shouldn’t be. Guys, I’m Lost puts you directly in the same predicament as the man, endlessly searching for answers that will never come. And that’s fine. These small vignettes of story offer bites of bother, forever exhausting your emotional resources as you go from wonder to laughing hysterics to worry and then bewilderment. It never lets up, and that is the true horror behind it all.
Guys, I’m Lost is freaky, but I loved it. In a way, it made me contemplate the weird world we all live in now. I know I will be coming back to this again. It’s not for everyone and may go over some heads…
… but it is for freaks like me.
