REVIEW — The Hangman’s Choke Book (Gregor the Gravedigger)

And out of the blue I’ve stumbled upon the joke (or choke) book of my dreams: The Hangman’s Choke Book by Gregor the Gravedigger. A short read and worth every second, this booklet has jokes you wouldn’t tell at a funeral… or maybe you would?

End-capped by Gregor with a short introduction and surprisingly heartfelt salutation about living and laughing through life’s many “nows,” this joke book has something for the monsters, the undeadites, and everything in between. Take this one, for example:

What do you call Paul Bunyan after skinning Smokey? A Paul-Bearer.

Or this one:

I’d tell you a joke about where you could stick your urn,
but I’m afraid it would be too niche.

All throughout the pages of The Hangman’s Choke Book are crudely-drawn doodles, pieces of gum and dirt, stamps from libraries and other works, and just a menagerie of filth that might grace the pages of a joke book handed down from one middle-schooler to another. It’s awesome.

Short, sweet, nostalgic, and the epitome of the word “rad” is The Hangman’s Choke Book. Filled with funny one liners and illustrated in such a way to get that perfect worn-in feeling, this piece of work is one I’d absolutely love to have a physical copy of — used Band-Aid included. As someone who loves the genre like its my own child, I could feel that same energy reading this; these 20 pages brought me back to my youth, hee-heeing and hawing the whole way through.
