REVIEW — Fetal Position (short)

Be prepared to be offended in the best of ways!

As a woman, I am unfortunately caught in the middle of America’s women’s rights obsession. With recent bills denying care for pregnant people and imprisoning those thought to have caused their own miscarriages, it’s a scary time to have a uterus. I can only imagine what it would be like if that clump of cells wasn’t even human.

Luckily, Fetal Position shows that scenario is all its politically incorrect, slimy glory. As a destitute gentleman walks through a crowd of anti-choice protesters and into a clinic, he suddenly spurts a tentacle through his stomach, signaling the birth to come of an extraterrestrial entity. The nurse is unhelpful at best. The policeman is likely more in-line with the protesters. And the alien mother accuses the mid-birth man of trying to skip out on child support. Ugh, Earthlings are all the same…

All the while, there are blood spurts and viscera, amniotic fluids and chunks of who-knows-what flying everywhere, covering every surface. Alas, “Slugbert” is born (and might I add, has gained automatic citizenship by birthright). Fetal Position is so wild and crazy that you almost can’t take it seriously.

But that’s the beauty of it. When normal conversations about today’s policies — not just on bodily autonomy, but on welfare, immigration, secularism, etc. — fail to reach the right ears and change minds, sometimes you need to go balls-to-the-wall to get the point across. Through all of the nasty moistness and highly comedic situations, you have no choice but to consider how these policies are affecting people. Fetal Position takes satire to a whole new level and forces you to face the real problems at hand — and let me give you a hint, it’s not pregnant people or immigrants.

In a time where we all really need a laugh to escape the cries, Fetal Position is a welcome treat. Seven minutes and Slugbert are all you really need to prompt a conversation.
