New Year, New Me: Speculating the Trends of 2022

Trends are sort of hit or miss for me. Sometimes what I think will happen gets shafted and sent a completely different direction. Other times, I’m right on the money. Let’s see what fortune telling we can do for 2022.

First and foremost, I see some remakes/reboots/sequels coming up. Scream and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are the toppers on this list, along with Halloween Ends. We also get horror favorite, Ethan Hawke, back on the screen with much-anticipated The Black Phone. Hollywood seems to be in the business of not coming up with too many new ideas lately — not just in horror, but in every genre — so I wouldn’t be surprised to see this continue not just through 2022 but for much of this decade. At least with blockbuster hits, that is.

Since the Covid variant, Omicron, is currently wreaking havoc (again) I foresee some small shut-downs. Fortunately for us, many people are vaccinated or are getting vaccinated, so it’s cutting down on the amount of people that would be hospitalized, therefore cutting down the likeliness of the full-scale quarantine we saw in 2020. That said, we’re still going to see some precautions taken at theaters: limited capacity, mask mandates, staggered event times etc.

That goes the same for events. At the time of writing this (late December 2021), Midsummer Scream (aka Season’s Screamings) just ended, so there are still events going on even in the midst of a new variant. I also haven’t heard of any reschedules as of yet (shameless plug: check our Calendar for upcoming releases, events, and other fun stuff!), so I anticipate we’ll see them go on as usual.

It’s a bit hard to speculate on what 2022 will bring us, honestly. We’re in such a different world, and there are so many things that are changing still. So I’ll keep this short and say I have no idea… But it’s exciting to think of the possibility of newness, and the possibility of a return to what we know and love.
