REVIEW – Super Simple Songs HALLOWEEN!

Some of you may not know, but I have a son. He’s a toddler, and as many of you with kids will know, one of his favorite things is to listen to the same set of kids songs repeatedly. I’m talking non-stop. I’m talking a I have a Spotify playlist so when we’re in the car and he’s fussy, I can play those to calm him down, level of repetitiveness. I know I’d probably go crazy if I had to listen to Frozen or Moana every day, but luckily for me, he’s not quite old enough to like story-based toons yet. What he does like are YouTube videos from Canadian channel Super Simple Songs; and with almost 35 million subscribers and multiple channels in many different languages, it’s not hard to see why. These songs are a great mix of ones we grew up on (Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes), and others that are more original (Baby Shark, or Put on Your Shoes). Some songs are seasonal as well, with Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Springtime selections… and of course, Halloween.

Obviously, Halloween is my favorite holiday. Both my son and my birthday are very close to it, so I’m making it a point to indoctrinate (for lack of a better term) him into my Halloween world of madness. And it was an extremely easy thing to do with two of Super Simple‘s videos in particular.

With a combined runtime of 91 minutes — that’s feature-length film territory — Super Simple Songs has given me the Halloween kid’s playlist of a lifetime. The best part is that my son cannot get enough of it!

Imagine some of your favorite kids’ songs with a Halloween holiday overlay. Five Little Ducks? Now it’s Five Little Ghosts. Down By the Bay? Let’s change that to a Spooky Bay. Baby Shark even makes an appearance with his friends as they go trick-or-treating in cute little costumes. And the ABC’s? Damn right they’re on there, lit up on jack o’ lanterns as kids stroll through a dark neighborhood. It’s got everything.

And I mean everything. The songs are top-par and very well-done. The animation (of which there are several styles with notable Super Simple characters) is wonderful, colorful, and vibrant. It’s extremely catchy and makes time fly by when you watch it. It’s an all-around wholesome, good, fun time.

My favorite part, besides it being Halloween-centered, is that a lot of the songs create this crazy sense of nostalgia for me. I certainly did not grow up with these versions of songs, but the animation in particular makes me reminisce about birthday parties and how crisp the air felt on Fall days… y’know, before Global Warming got really bad. I am strangely content listening and watching, even singing along and helping my son count down how many monsters were jumping on the bed.

I always appreciate when kids shows make an effort to introduce Halloween and other scary things by being fun and happy. To me, Halloween is mostly a scary (but enjoyable) holiday; but there is still a side that has laughter, comradery, adventure, and love. Super Simple Songs delivers all of that in a way that’s easily digestible and engaging for little kids. Honestly, I find myself wanting to turn it on for background noise when my son is sleeping or if I’m out running errands.

Super Simple Songs really hit a goldmine with their Halloween videos. My son is only a toddler, but I can foresee him still listening to these as he grows up, possibly even showing them to his kids, should he have any. And I hope that does happen because I sure as hell love these too.
